Vanza Mae Davis (Patterson) (1939-2018)

My mother, Vanza Davis, was b. 21 August 1939 in Greensboro, Guilford Co, NC. She grew up in that town and later went to nursing school in High Point, NC.

On 1 June 1962, Vanza married the love of her life, Francis (Frank) Patterson. He was in the Air Force in Maine at the time, but had graduated from high school in High Point, NC. Frank was born on 25 June 1940 in Ivylog, Union, GA, however. Frank and Vanza raised two sons, Francis Oliver (Chip) Patterson Jr, and myself – Charles Wesley (Wes) Patterson.

Frank and Vanza moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1971 for Frank to attend Piedmont Bible College. He graduated in 1976, and by 1979 they and the family were in Bangladesh (in SE Asia) as missionaries. They served there off and on till 1992.

Vanza died on 15 March 2018. Frank died on 31 July 2015. Both died in Winston-Salem, NC.

Vanza’s Heritage

Vanza Davis Patterson’s parents were Troy Davis and Lettie Langley (Davis). The Davis family was of Welsh heritage, but also seem to have Native American in them.

Vanza’s 3xG-Grandfather, Robert Davis, was born 1744 in either Wales or NC. He died 02 Aug 1828 at Carthage, Moore Co, NC. He married Nancy Cheek who descends from Royal families.

Vanza’s 2xG-Grandfather was William Coleman Davis Sr. William was born ca. 1793 in Moore Co, NC and died between 1870-80, also in Moore Co, NC. His wife was Phoebe (Feby) Phillips.

Vanza’s G-Grandfather was William Coleman Davis Jr. He was born between 1820-22, Moore Co, NC. He died between 1904 and July of 1905 in Moore Co, NC. He married Clarkey Hilliard.

Vanza’s Grandfather was John (Wesley) Davis. Wesley was born ca. 1844 in Carthage, Moore Co, NC and died Abt. 1911, most likely in Moore Co, NC. He married Ruth Ann Barber, who moved with their children to Greensboro, NC after Wesley’s death.

Vanza’s father was Troy Lee Davis. Troy was born 07 Aug 1909 in Carthage, Moore Co, NC. His father Wesley Davis was 65 years old when Troy was born. Troy died 10 Oct 1988 Salisbury, Rowan Co, NC. Troy married Lettie Mae Langley on 19 May 1934.

Troy and Lettie had three sons and one daughter. George was born in 1937; Garland was born in 1938; Vanza was born in 1939; and Jimmy was born in 1940 – all in Greensboro, Guilford Co, NC

Vanza’s mother was Lettie Mae Langley. Lettie was born 17 Mar 1915 Henderson, Vance Co, NC. She died 12 Nov 1990 Tyro, Davidson Co, NC. Lettie was the daughter of George Thomas Langley and Evanzalene (Vanza) Mae McGhee.
